January 2011: Retrospecticus

January 31, 2011

I just got back last night from Massachusetts, site of another great Super Bowl of Birding with a fun group of birders and bloggers.  I’ll certainly have more on that this week, but here’s what happened the rest of the month.

The biggest news is that I’ll be taking a more active role in managing the blog of the ABA.  Things got started this month and we’re off to a good start.

January is a good time to look back on the year that was, as I recounted my best bird experiences from 2010.

The mass bird die-offs early this year caused a lot of consternation among the general public beyond birders, not to mention some weird conspiracy theories.  I address that issue here.

I do love Ruby-crowned Kinglets, especially when they forage mere feet from me.

I’ve also kicked off a Triangle Big Year in the four counties of Orange, Durham, Wake and Chatham.  My goal is to top 215 this year.  We’ll see if I even get close.  My wife has her own thoughts on the matter

And as for that Big Year, the first month is in the book and I’m at 87 thanks to several productive days in the field.  Hopefully I’ll crack 110 by the end of next month.

Onward to February.  Thanks for reading!
