Sweet relief

October 18, 2010

Offered as a bookend to this post from last week.

In addition to the bird that need not be named, I picked up Laughing Gull and Dunlin, both pretty good birds for Durham County.

In case you were wondering, the bird was so cooperative that even though I saw it briefly Saturday, I was able to go back Sunday afternoon for a brief chance at the photo leading off this post. I worry, though, that it’s becoming a bit too cooperative as the sedges that it’s foraging in, and from which most people are flushing it, were tramped down something fierce in the 24 hours between when I originally saw it and when I returned to try for a photo.  Vast swaths of what had been foot high sedges on midday Saturday had been stomped flat on Sunday.  This seems excessive to me as it isn’t difficult to walk through those plants without disturbing them.

For the bird’s sake, I hope that this week is less taxing, and that it doesn’t stick around too much longer before heading south again.  Enough people have seen it in the 10 days it’s been around, and that’s something I would have said even if I hadn’t seen it.

That said, it was pretty cool.  Thanks to Robert Meehan, who goes by the handle BirdTrainerRobert round these parts, for helping me find it.

    @John- Thanks!

    @Robert- I wouldn’t have found it without you, I would have been wandering on the edge of the sedges wondering why I couldn’t find the bird in the willows. So thanks!

    @Jochen- Thanks!

    @Mike- Indeed! Hardly deserves to be called a nemesis really, but it had the makings at the time. Thanks!
