February 2010: Retrospecticus

February 26, 2010

February is the shortest month, but a lot happened here at The Drinking Bird!

For starters, I recounted the Super Bowl of Birding VII, where I competed with the Bloggerhead Kingbirds, a team of awesome bird bloggers that can now call itself the reigning champions of Essex County.

I took my son on a twitch for Varied Thrush in a nearby town.  We didn’t find the bird, but he was up for it!  Which with a baby, is really all you can hope for.

I challenged the practice of honorific possessives in bird common names, and I have to say, I hoped there would be a little more discussion on this post.  Maybe I can foment some here.  Everything you know is wrong! Discuss!

My wife covered for me while I was gone, with an entertaining post where she finally expressed her deep-seeded hatred of birding.  No, I kid, but you should read it anyway if you haven’t.

And what else…

Oh yeah, Guatemala!  I traveled to Central America where I birded beautiful places with amazing people and saw birds both fantastic and familiar, among other things.  It wasn’t all happiness and rainbows, but even the disappointments were pretty great.

Oh, and I recently had a short piece published in Birder’s World magazine.  You can’t read it online unless you’re a subscriber, which sort of sucks, but if you want to check it out you can either subscribe or if you’re like me, you can head on over to your local bookstore to peruse the merchandise.

What a month! I can’t promise March will be as much fun, but you never know…

Thanks for reading!
