Good news in South Carolina for seabirds: South Carolina’s Seabird Population Up

From the article-

Close to 450 brown pelicans called the patch of land in Charleston’s harbor home in 2005. It’s now home to more than 1200 brown pelicans. Only 350 royal terns lived on the bank in 2005, but now more than 1200 of those are walking around. Just 40 black skimmers were the(sic) two years ago. Now, there’s 18o.

What’s really great is that this island is so close to such a large metropolitan area. All they’ve done is prevented people from stopping there anymore. Black Skimmers and Royal Terns specifically are having trouble in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks because the off-road vehicles run over their nests. Just shows how resiliant some of these birds are if they’re given a little peace and quiet.
