What a great post about the Atitlán Grebe Nate. I never knew about this bird. My wife and I visited Lake Atitlán in 1976 and were sitting on the beach there when the earthquake struck.

Growing up in California, I knew what it was and since we were on the beach with no buildings in sight, it was like being on a roller coaster for me, but she was terrified having never been in an earthquake before.

These were pre-birding days for us. Unfortunate because Lake Atitlán is a gorgeous place and one I would like to have seen as a birder. Very sad about the turn of events for the Lake Atitlán Grebe. I would like to have seen one knowing its history, thanks to your post.

Another unnecessary loss of a rare endemic species.

How sad that the earthquake happened as they were on the edge of a comeback. An unpleasant dose of irony.
