December 2008: Retrospecticus

The end to another year. I hope you all had a phenomenal holiday season, regardless of what you celebrate. My “combination platter” of a holiday was great, and after a wonderful Hannukah week with my wife’s family and a merry Christmas with mine, we ended the season on Hatteras Island. It just so happens to be arguably the best birding spot in North Carolina, no better place to close out the Big Year. Find out how I did next week, but for now? A look back.

Birding was pretty good this month, it had its high points and its lows, and some good experiences in between.

I got hit with a couple memes, one bird related and one not so much.

I decried the state of recent environmental policy overturns by the departing presidential administration. One regulating mountaintop removal mining and one allowing loaded firearms on federally protected lands.

And I realized the more practical applications of bird skinning.

Next month I’ll have some cool stuff, including the end of my Big Year and a blogger convention and birding competition that promises to be a lot of fun.

Happy New Year and thanks for a great 2008 to all you folks who read, comment, or just swing by on the odd google search.
