May: Retrospecticus
Brand new I and the Bird over at Wanderin’ Weeta.
May was a down month in blogging post terms for me, but that was made up for by no fewer than three big birding trips that netted me some crucial birds for the Big Year. The bird bonanza nearly made up for the maladies suffered. You can’t say I didn’t earn my birds this month.
First there was the trip out west where I busted my foot (It’s nearly all better now, thanks).
Then an outing to the Roanoke Rapids where I braved bugs and bushwhacked through burning nettle for a Swainson’s Warbler.
And last, but certainly not least, a pelagic out of Hatteras, where the price for a major North American rarity was paid over the railing of the Stormy Petrel II.
In between I considered the impact of my obsession on those close to me, marveled at the evolutionary brilliance of bird vision, applauded a principled stand for birds in my state, and triumphantly returned to the NC museum to measure tiny birds.
Will the birding slow now that the southern summer begins to rear its sticky, sweaty head? Afraid not, folks. The Big Year requires a year-long commitment, and there remain some interesting nesting birds around the state for me to find, tick, and write about.
So stick around, we’ll have fun I hope.

There is a pair of nesting Mississippi Kites in Greensboro! I will send you directions if you want them.
Yes! Absolutely!
