Wow, I hope you're not implying that everything I've done in my life as a birder is leading to the singular moment of starting a free blog.
Funny you should choose the drinking bird. When I was a kid, I used to watch those little plastic toys continually returning to the cup for a drink. I'd try to figure out how the bird managed to keep getting a drink over and over again. I even mentioned it to my crummy high school Physics teacher as an example of that "impossible perpetual motion machine" , and he just laughed and said that the water would eventually evaporate.
Of course, I realize that your birding blog is about recent history, but it surely brings back a lot of cool memories in the field as you were growing up.... Anna's Hummingbird in Ozark, that first Cooper's Hawk on our first CBC, your really cool CBC sighting and accepted documentation of a winter Palm Warbler in Missouri, the Sarita Rest Stop Tropical Parula in Texas, Swallow tailed and Snail Kites among other great birds in Florida, and thousands of confusing shorebirds in Kansas on our first serious attempt at tackling their IDs. The list goes on and on.
Memories of these flying gods and goddesses span our time together and continue to reach into the present. I am really looking forward to reading your spin on the subject.
Good luck, and
Keep soaring,
d
